Our 200th Blog Post! SPICE Up Your Valentine's Day

mcwiek

Looking to make this year’s Valentine’s Day extra SPICEy? At Groesbeck, we’re all about adding SPICE to relationships. SPICE, in Creighton terms, encompasses the ways to love others Spiritually, Physically, Intellectually, Communicatively/Creatively, and Emotionally, as we’ve written about in previous blog posts. With Valentine’s Day around the corner, I wanted to share some ideas that may help you love your spouse and family more fully this week.

SPIRITUAL: Start the day in prayer. Not sure where to begin? Valentine’s Day this year falls on a Friday, which is the day we pray the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary. Take some time to meditate the ways the Lord sacrificed Himself to love you, then ponder ways that you can love those around you in the same sacrificial manner. Bonus if you can do this with your spouse and/or family and friends.

PHYSICAL: I know it’s extra chilly here in Michigan, but there’s no such thing as bad weather, just unsuitable clothing, am I right? Bundle up alongside your loved ones, get outside, let the fresh air fill your lungs, and enjoy a nice walk in the beautiful, snowy winter. If you’re not too keen on going out in the cold, try making a playlist with some favorite songs to sing and dance along to, and have an in-home jam session/dance party!

INTELLECTUAL: While Valentine’s Day is largely a “Hallmark Holiday” in our society, it is actually one of the days we celebrate the feast of Saint Valentine. This is a great opportunity to discuss the history of Saint Valentine with your spouse and loved ones. What was it like to be a Christian in his time? What challenges would you face as a priest like him, or as a couple trying to get married in the church then? How is faith life, courtship, and marriage different today than it was back then?

COMMUNICATIVE/CREATIVE: Have some fun cooking in the kitchen and make your own fertility-friendly meal! Choose to cook/bake with nutrient-dense foods that are good for fertility, like fresh, whole, unprocessed foods like dark leafy greens, berries, meats, and healthy fats. Avoid inflammatory foods like sugar, processed items, seed oils, gluten, and dairy. Check out some of the recipes previously posted on our blog for ideas!

EMOTIONAL: Wrap up the day by talking about the big (and small) moments. Talk about the highlights of the day, what filled your heart with joy, what you’re grateful for, the lows, what hurt, how you can love each other better in the future, etc.

I hope these ideas help you have a very SPICEy Valentine’s Day! If you liked this post, stay tuned for more SPICE content on our blog in the future.
